Carrel, Alexis

Carrel, Alexis
(1873-1944)
   surgeon, physiologist, Nobel laureate
Born in Foy-lès-Lyon and educated at the university of lyon, Alexis Carrel, who did his research both in France and in the united states, was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology in 1912 for his earlier (1902) development of a technique for suturing blood vessels. When he returned to France in 1939, he worked for the vichy regime as head of the Fondation française, which studied human physiological problems (1941). Because of this, and his theories on eugenics, he was much criticized. Carrel, who had also done some of his work in the united states in collaboration with Charles Lindbergh, wrote L'Homme, cet inconnu (1936), in which he put forth his elitist and racist philosophy.
